The Skint Garden

The Skint Garden Challenge

This is our rental house while I am working away from home. When we moved in this time last year the garden was in a bit of a sorry state and has only got muddier, certainly not better. This year I am going to refurbish the garden to make it a place that Sprogzilla and I want to spend time in but don't want to spend any real money on as the place isn't ours. With this in mind spending will be limited to a tiny budget of £100 over as long as we are still staying here to cover seeds, plants and anything else that I might want (Sprogzilla hates gardening).

I will be doing all the garden work myself (slipped disc permitting) and sadly am not really allowed to change the garden layout or structure.  Can it be turned into something lovely instead of something so forlorn?

Skint Garden Rules:

  • It has got to be bee- and wildlife-friendly, so lots of flowering plants and things with seeds and berries for the birds in winter.
  • Gardens should be a treat for the senses so plants will be chosen that are both lovely to look at and which smell nice.
  • This will include some herbs and some simple veggies.
  • Being cheap, I will take cuttings and cadge/swap plants as much as possible.
  • All gardening will be done organically without pesticides and with respect for wildlife, except for slugs. They are going over next door's fence.
  • Creativity encouraged, especially using found things and recycling as much possible.
  • I am allowed to use things that I have lying around but anything bought specifically adds to the tally.
  • No cheating and going over the budget at all. Once the cash is gone, it's gone. Quite a challenge.
  • Updates on the garden will be posted at the end of each month ,with a running total of what  has been spent and what is left.
  • Monty and Alan have absolutely nothing to fear from me. The small budget means that most of the plants will be raised from seed. Being a talentless amateur this could get interesting. Or even a bit Zen with combed dirt if things don't work out.
Watch this space!
